How a PPA Works
With a solar PPA, the provider (Synergex and our PPA financier) takes care of everything – design, installation, financing, and long-term operation of the system.
We evaluate your site’s solar potential and size a system that optimally meets a portion of your energy needs.
Once the system is installed on your roof or property, it immediately begins generating clean electricity.
You purchase this solar electricity at an agreed-upon rate (for example, X cents per kWh) under a long-term contract.
Any additional power you need beyond what the solar provides, you continue to get from the grid as normal (typically at your standard utility rate).
If the solar system ever produces more than you’re using at that moment (for instance on weekends or holidays), excess energy can flow back to the grid and may earn you credits via the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme (feed-in tariff) if eligible.
A solar PPA is usually a long-term agreement, often 10 to 20 years (contract lengths can vary, commonly falling in the 10–25 year range).
This term length ensures the PPA rate stays locked in for a long period, protecting you against future electricity price hikes.
At the end of the PPA term, you typically have options: renew the PPA, purchase the solar system at a nominal cost, or, if desired, have the system removed or upgraded.
We structure end-of-term options flexibly – many businesses choose to buy the system for a token amount and then enjoy free solar power for the remainder of the system’s life.

Benefits of a
$0 Capital Outlay
Acquire a solar power system with no upfront investment. This eliminates the need to dip into capital or take out loans – the solar provider covers the system cost. For businesses that prefer to preserve capital for core operations, a PPA is ideal.
Immediate & Ongoing Savings
From day one, the solar PPA rate per kWh is typically well below your utility’s rate, so you start saving money immediately. These savings often increase over time as grid electricity prices rise while your PPA rate is locked in. Many companies see tens of thousands of dollars in cumulative savings over the contract term.
Cash-Flow Positive Energy
Because there’s no loan payment and the PPA rate is cheaper than what you would pay the utility, a PPA arrangement is usually cash-flow positive – meaning your monthly energy costs are lower than they would be without the solar. You’re essentially getting cheaper power without any added expense.
No Maintenance or Performance Risk
Under a PPA, Synergex takes full responsibility for system performance and maintenance throughout the contract.
We monitor the solar array, perform regular maintenance, and guarantee that the system operates as promised.
These include but are lot limited to:
- Regular cleaning and inspection of solar panels to ensure optimal energy production
- Monitoring system performance to identify potential issues
- Maintenance of inverters and other system components
- Ensuring system availability and uptime
- Meeting specific performance metrics, such as energy yield or capacity factor
If any repairs or inverter replacements are needed, that’s on us – you simply pay for the energy produced.
This eliminates operational headaches for you.
If the system underperforms or equipment fails, we cover it and ensure you continue to receive the expected power.
Our PPA contracts include performance guarantees on energy output for your peace of mind.
- Off-Balance Sheet Solution: Because you are not purchasing the asset, the solar system usually does not appear on your balance sheet.
The PPA is a service agreement, not debt.
This can be advantageous for companies wanting to avoid new liabilities while still upgrading their infrastructure.
- Energy Price Certainty: With a fixed or pre-agreed escalator on the PPA rate, you gain long-term predictability in energy costs.
This shields your business from volatile electricity tariffs and future price increases in the energy market.
Locking in a portion of your power at a stable rate for 10–20 years provides valuable budget stability.
- Sustainability and Branding: A PPA makes it simple to switch to renewable energy and dramatically reduce your carbon footprint without any capital hurdle.
Depending on system size, a substantial portion of your power (often 20–80%) will come from on-site solar, greatly cutting your greenhouse gas emissions.
This supports your corporate sustainability goals and can improve your NABERS rating (for building energy performance).
It also serves as a positive story for your brand – demonstrating environmental leadership to customers, investors, and the community.
- Flexible End-of-Term Options: At the end of the contract, you have flexibility.
Many businesses choose to purchase the system at that point (often at a greatly reduced residual value) and then enjoy free solar power for many years to come.
Alternatively, you might renew the PPA with an upgraded system, or have it removed if it no longer suits your needs.
Synergex will work with you to determine the best end-of-term outcome.

Commercial Solar Solutions for Harsh Australian Conditions
Eligibility and Candidates
Solar PPAs are generally best suited for businesses with consistent daytime energy use and adequate roof or ground space for solar panels.
Ideal candidates include manufacturing facilities, warehouses, shopping centres, supermarkets, hospitals, schools and universities, commercial offices, and other medium to large power users – typically those consuming over ~50 MWh (50,000 kWh) per year.
(For context, 50 MWh/year is roughly a $15,000+ annual power bill.)
Having higher consumption makes a PPA more worthwhile because the savings are greater.
It’s also important that you own your premises or have a long-term lease with landlord approval, since the solar system will sit on the property for the duration of the agreement.
Synergex will assess your site’s structural suitability (roof condition, available area, shading, etc.) to ensure a solar PPA is viable.
Even if your business is not extremely large, don’t count yourself out – we can structure PPAs for systems as small as ~30 kW up to multi-megawatt installations.
Our team can advise if a PPA or an alternative financing model (like an operating lease) makes the most sense given your circumstances.
Renewable Energy Certificates & Carbon Credits
One unique aspect of PPAs is how renewable energy certificates are handled.
Under Australian law, solar systems generate environmental certificates for the clean power they produce.
For commercial-scale systems (>100 kW), Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs) are created – typically 1 LGC per megawatt-hour of solar energy.
In a PPA, the PPA provider retains ownership of these certificates (since they own the system).
The provider can sell LGCs to third parties (e.g. to electricity retailers who need them for Renewable Energy Target compliance) and use that revenue to help subsidise the cost of your PPA rate.
In essence, the ability to monetise LGCs is part of what allows the PPA provider to offer you a lower energy price.
This is a win-win: you get cheaper power, and the provider recoups some costs via the green certificates.
For you as the customer, the key takeaway is that you still get the green benefit (you can rightfully claim you are using renewable energy), but you’re letting the provider handle the complexities of certificates and carbon markets.
Some providers may offer to pass through a portion of this benefit – for example, by slightly lowering your rate if LGC prices rise – but generally the provider manages the certificates.
Additionally, PPAs can be structured to include carbon offset benefits.
By using solar via a PPA, your business is effectively avoiding CO₂ emissions that would otherwise come from grid power.
This reduction could potentially be quantified and used toward your carbon neutrality goals.
In some cases, solar PPA providers bundle carbon credits or offsets into the agreement, or can assist you in claiming programmes like Climate Active certifications for using renewables.
For Example:
Commercial & Industrial site implements an energy-efficient lighting project that reduces energy consumption by 500 MWh per year. Assuming an emissions intensity factor of 0.8 tons CO2-e per MWh, the project would generate:
- Emissions reductions: 500 MWh x 0.8 tons CO2-e/MWh = 400 tons CO2-e per year
- Carbon credits: 400 tons CO2-e per year x 1 ACCU/ton CO2-e = 400 ACCUs per year
- Carbon credit value: 400 ACCUs x $30/ACCU = $12,000 per year
The actual calculation would depend on the specific project details, emissions profile, and carbon credit scheme.
Synergex will ensure you receive documentation of your renewable energy usage under the PPA, so you can confidently communicate your emissions reductions to stakeholders.
